Lopota Lake Resort & Spa-Family Resort in Kakheti, Georgia

Kakheti, Georgia is a must-visit area on any Georgia trip. One of the integral parts of Georgian culture is winemaking! Kakheti is the wine-making center of Georgia. In Kakheti, you will find vineyard after vineyard and plenty of wineries where you can taste traditional Georgian wine.

Georgia is one of the oldest (possibly THE oldest) wine-making civilization-dating back to 6,000 B.C. Georgia has its own traditional wine-making process in clay pots called qvevris that are buried in the ground. You will be able to taste a difference!

One of the best hotels in Kakheti is Lopota Lake Resort & Spa. Whether you’re traveling with kids or only adults, this is the place to go for all the amenities and activities for the best Kakheti trip.

WHERE IS LOPOTA LAKE RESORT AND SPA?

The Lopota Lake Resort is less than a 2.5 hour drive from the capital city Tbilisi. The resort is just outside the Kakhetian city Telavi. The Kakheti region is the center of wine production in  Georgia. In the immediate area of Lopota Lake Resort, you will find countless vineyards and wineries to visit.

You will need a car to get to the resort. There is no public transportation available. You can rent a car and self-drive or hire a private transfer. Driving in Georgia can be a little crazy (a lot of passing on two-lane roads, livestock in the road, sometimes poor road conditions, people not observing traffic rules, etc.). You will have to decide if you’re willing to take that on or if you would prefer a driver. If you also plan to explore the surrounding wine country, you will need transportation for that as well. The hotel could help you arrange a tour/transportation. Having your own car will allow you to explore on your own.

LOPOTA LAKE RESORT AMENITIES

There is a lot to do at the resort, this is why it is one of the best winery resorts in Georgia! You will find an activity that interests everyone in your party.

  • Pools-There are several pools on the property, including one indoor pool. Each pool is slightly different and offers different things. Take a walk and decide which one looks good to you! Be sure and check the water temperature in each as well, they can vary a bit.

  • Boat Rental-Rent a pedal boat and cruise around the lake! The view from the water is great and there are a lot of ducks and swans you can check out while on the water.

  • Rent bikes-The resort offers bike rentals by the hour. There is a nice flat loop around the lake for bike riding (or walking) with a couple of other paths that will take you to the back of the property.

  • Playgrounds-Several small playgrounds are located around the property. The largest one (and the one with the most shade) is located toward the back of the property on the way to the horse stables.

  • Rent fishing gear-You can rent fishing poles from the same place that you rent bikes and boats. Take your poles out on a boat or fish from shore.

  • Miniature Golf/Tennis-There are tennis courts and a miniature golf course on the property. You can get equipment from the activity center where the other rentals are made.

  • Horseback Riding-If you head to the back of Lopota Lake Resort, you will find some horse stables and a couple pens of rabbits and chickens. You can visit the horses and watch them out grazing in the grass or even go for a horseback ride. Children can go for a ride as well, they seemed to have helmets available but we brought our own.

  • ATV Rentals-Rent ATVs and go for a ride out in the countryside behind the resort.

  • Wine Tasting & Winery Tour-Wine Tastings and winery tours can be arranged with Chateau Buera. I wouldn’t recommend this with kids unless you have a small baby who can be worn in a carrier. There are many stairs to walk down and it is not stroller accessible. One option would be to try and put your kids in the kids club at the same time as your tour & tasting.

  • Spa-There is a spa on the property, book a treatment for a little relaxation.

  • Kids Club-Lopota Lake has a kids club where you can drop off children to play and be looked after by a staff member. Be sure to contact the hotel prior to your visit to make sure the kids club is operating and what the current procedures are.

FOOD AT LOPOTA LAKE RESORT

  • Chateau Buera-the most high-end dining on the property located in the beautiful white chateau that also serves as an on-site winery. The menu is sophisticated with several interesting choices but does not offer many kid-friendly options. We were welcomed by the restaurant staff even with 3 children with us. We chose to eat outside to give the kids more freedom to move and thought that was a good choice.

  • Kakhetian Corner-This is the spot for fresh-made Georgian specialties. Shashlik (grilled meat skewers), shoti (freshly baked bread), and Georgian salads are on the menu here. The dining area is semi-open, covered tables but still open to the outside. If you’re lucky you may even be able to watch some grape stopping, traditional singing, or bread making.

French style Chateau Buera houses a winery and an elegant restaurant at Lopota Lake Resort.

  • Dining Hall-this main dining area has indoor and outdoor seating and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is the only breakfast dining option available. It is normally a buffet but during COVID times, everything is being plated by a server behind plexiglass. There is a big variety of food here but the quality is so-so. You can find lots of baked goods, salads, and hot dishes here.

  • Poolside Dining-A couple of the pools have bungalows that offer some covered seating. Order typical bar food like pizza, club sandwiches, and chicken wings here. I’m also told they make great cocktails here!

These are the dining options we have personally tried. The website also lists two other dining options.

ROOMS AT LOPOTA LAKE RESORT

Lopota Lake Resort is great for families. This is one hotel that provides very spacious family accommodations. We booked a family room that was 2 levels. It had 2 queen beds (one upstairs, one downstairs), 2 bathrooms, and 2 balconies. Plenty of room for us and all of our stuff. They do provide cribs/baby cots, just make sure to ask for one when you reserve as they can run out.

One thing to note about the rooms is that the buildings do not have elevators. So if you are bringing a stroller, your choices are to carry it up and down to the room or to leave it at the base of the stairs. We did leave our stroller at the bottom, but of course, there is always a chance it could disappear.

To book a room, visit Lopota Lake Resort & Spa website. Booking is easy and the staff is very responsive. Watch more of our time at Lopota Lake in the video below.

WHY WE LOVE LOPOTA LAKE RESORT

As you’ve probably realized, there’s a lot to love here! The property itself is beautiful and there are so many things to do! It’s the perfect distance for a weekend getaway from Tbilisi. Kakheti, Georgia is such an important place to understand Georgian culture. The wine culture is integral to the Georgian experience, and there’s no better place to see it and learn about it than here.

The kids love to come to Lopota Lake when the weather is warm so they can swim. We think grape harvest time (mid-late September through early October) is a great time to come so you can participate in grape picking and stomping.

Any time of year you come, you will enjoy your visit. If you’re looking to relax and enjoy nature after the hustle and bustle of Tbilisi, this is a great place to come. It’s also a great jumping-off point if you want to visit the wineries in the area. We would highly recommend adding time to any visit to Tbilisi to be able to experience this. 3 days and 2 nights would be plenty of time.
